The Suffolk Office of Emergency Management coordinates the county's response to natural and man made disasters. Its personnel is responsible for the management of the county's emergency operation center. The office collaborates with local, state and federal officials in shelter management, planning, resource management and radiological response coordination. The Suffolk Office of Emergency Management also maintains a 24-hour emergency helpline for residents throughout Suffolk County, N.Y. The office is operated by the government of the state of New York, which also maintains several other departments, including civil service, administration, economic development and workforce housing, elections, energy, public works, police and planning. The Suffolk Office of Emergency Management is located in Yaphank, N.Y.
