- FillingsMost of us have had amalgam fillings (silver) or gold filling restorations. Some amalgam fillings have been called mercury fillings, as many of them contained mercury. Metal fillings were effective but were very noticeable and tended to blacken in color over time.
- Resin CompositeBonding is a white composite resin filling that can be placed in the back teeth as well as the front teeth. Composites are the solution for restoring decayed teeth, making cosmetic improvements, and even changing the color of your teeth or reshaping teeth. Bonding will lighten any stains you may have, close minor gaps, and can be used to correct crooked teeth. Bonding will basically cover any natural flaws through an initial application of a thin coating of plastic material on the front surface of your teeth. The hardening material is sculpted and shaped and hardened with a high intensity light. The final bonding is polished for a final touch.
- VeneersThis first step involves active participation between you and your dentist. Explain to your dentist the result that you are trying to achieve. During this appointment, your dentist will examine your teeth to make sure dental veneers are appropriate for you and discuss what the procedure will involve and some of its limitations. He or she may also take X-rays and possibly make impressions of your mouth and teeth.
- CrownsGrinding your teeth, an improper bite, age, fillings, and tooth decay can all be contributing factors in the wearing down, cracking, or breakage of your teeth. Dental crowns cover the entire visible surface of your affected tooth and add strength, durability, and tooth stability. Your dentist will usually be able to spot problem areas in your mouth that might lead to tooth damage and a need for crowns. By selectively grinding the tips of your middle and back teeth (called cusps), your bite can be altered to reduce the stress on at-risk teeth.
- BridgesAdvantages of dental bridges: Bridges are natural in appearance and usually require only two visits to your dentist. If you maintain good oral hygiene, you fixed bridge should last for 10 years or more.
- Dental BondingAdvantage: Bonding has a big advantage when it comes to esthetics and appearance. Composites permit your cosmetic dentist to remove only the decayed area of your tooth. Composite bonding expands just like your teeth and is much less likely to cause cracks in your tooth. Bonding directly to the tooth to provide support, composites can be used to fill in cracks, chips, and gaps. Composites also allow the dentist to match the color of your other teeth.
- Root Canal TreatmentIf your tooth is infected or there is severe damage to the pulp, a root canal may be recommended. Pain in the tooth is the most common and obvious symptom. The most common cause of an infection is an untreated cavity. The pulp inside the tooth can become inflamed as a result of trauma or extensive restorative work. It can even be affected by a series of fillings being applied in a short period of time. This inflammation usually leads to infection.
- Periodontal SurgeryTreatment without good oral hygiene practices at home will not be successful. Depending on the stage of the disease, treatment can be as simple as cleaning, called prophylaxis, or as complex as periodontal surgery. In advanced cases, extraction of some or all teeth may be necessary.
- DenturesA dental bridge is a false tooth, also known as a pontic. If you have space from a missing tooth, a bridge will be custom made to fill the space with a false tooth. In a fixed bridge, the false tooth is fused between two porcelain crowns to fill in the area left by a missing tooth. The two crowns holding it in place are attached to the teeth on each side of the false tooth. This procedure is used to replace one or more missing teeth. Fixed bridges cannot be removed from your mouth as you might do with partial dentures. Single tooth implants may be used at other times to eliminate the need for supporting crowns.

- Bone GraftingThe implant procedure is the same whether one or all teeth are missing. To prepare the implant site, the gum tissue is opened to expose the bone area where the implant will be placed. In situations where there is insufficient bone structure, bone grafting may be a recommended procedure. Once healthy bone has been established, a special drill is used to prepare the bone to receive the implant. After the bone has been prepared, the implant is placed and the tissue is sutured. The sutures are typically removed seven to fourteen days after surgery. The healing process takes three to six months. This is the amount of time it usually takes the implant to integrate (fuse) with the bone. When the implant is ready, a special abutment is attached to the implant – this is the support for the new porcelain crown. Today’s technologies often include zirconium abutments attached to the implant post to assure that the new porcelain tooth possesses translucency properties similar to a natural tooth. After impressions are taken, a crown is made and shaded to match your existing teeth. The crown is then slipped over the post and cemented.
