I decided to try out a new mechanic and went to Art's Front End and Break Service for a small job that had to do with my evap canister and filter. I dropped my car off on a Sunday and called every day until Wednesday for a quote so I could decide whether or not I would like them to perform the work on my car. Each day I called the more they got annoyed and told me that they could not provide me with a quote. They were incredibly rude on the phone, had no customer service skills, called me "honey" "sweetie" each and every time and never showed the respect that I deserved.

Finally on Wednesday when I spoke to the customer service guy I again asked for a quote. He told me that one of the two parts would cost me $230. He ordered the second part but didn't know how much it was....which is strange as they ordered the part. He also couldn't provide me with a real estimate as to how much labor would cost. They said 2 maybe 3 hours at $70 an hour. I asked for a legitimate quote and was denied once again. I hung up the phone and immediately called a few mechanics to get quotes. I was given two quotes around $200 for both parts, labor and taxes. In minutes I called Arts Front End and Break Service and told them to not touch my car and that I would be by to pick it up. The guy on the phone told me that I couldn't pick it up until I spoke to the mechanic directly in the morning. I called in the morning and the mechanic then told me that my car is in pieces (and it was) and that he would not let that car leave the lot without $100 in hand. I continued to tell him respectfully that I did not owe him a dime as I did not request any work be done to my car. I never signed a waiver, I never got a phone call explaining the work, how much it would cost, what they would be doing etc. The mechanic told me to "Call the cops because I'm not getting my car back without $100."

So I called the police and a tow truck and showed up at the business. My car was on a lift and the gas tank was completely out of the car as well as the muffler. The owner decided he was going to tell the tow truck guy that he can't take the car the way it is and if I want the car put back together that I owe him another $100. The tow truck guy told the owner to beat it and did what he had to.

When I brought my car to the new mechanic he was absolutely appalled and extremely confused because the according to him the gas tank DOES NOT need to be taken out in order to do the necessary work to my car. It sounds like they took it out just to make my life more difficult. If they are licensed mechanics at Arts Front End and Break Service then they should know that the gas tank does not need to come out.

Needless to say I had to pay the $100 because they would not bring my car down from the lift without it. And unfortunately the cops cannot get involved in situations like this. They are only allowed to "keep the peace."

The owner is one rude, miserable, sneaky, conniving fraud. The bottom line is I did not ask for ONE thing to be done on my car....just simply wanted to give a new mechanic the opportunity to supply me with a quote before anything was done. They saw a young girl and figured they could take advantage of me.

Old school mechanics who do their job and do it well. Very reasonably priced, and that rare quality of being honest, and not trying to overcharge for services not needed.
