They do a wonderful job teaching survival swimming. There will be tears with survivial swimming but it is critical to water safety. However, for children beyond survival swimming and now taking stroke lessons, many of the instructors feel that it is part of the learning process for children to be fearful and crying. The general mentality is that it is ok for even the smallest children (toddlers) to cry when learning proper swimming technique.
