- Dental CareHere at Winchester Veterinary Group, we are proud to offer compassionate and thorough dental services for your pet. We have been providing Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment (COHAT) for dental conditions for more than 10 years. Our doctors who perform COHATs receive additional training and continuing education on a regular basis in order to maintain and exceed current standards of care. The following article outlines what is included in a COHAT, some of the more common dental conditions we see, their treatment, and how a complete COHAT is essential for their diagnosis and management...
- VaccinationDescriptions of rabies go back thousands of years as rabies has classically been one of the most feared infections of all time. It is caused by a bullet-shaped rhabdovirus that is relatively unstable in the environment; establishing infection requires direct contact with infected mucous membranes. In most cases, disease is transmitted by a bite wound. Only mammals are susceptible to infection, wildlife being the primary animal group where infection occurs. When wildlife come into contact with humans or domestic animals, rabies becomes a public health problem. Despite vaccination being readily available, every year the U.S. reports approximately 50 canine deaths, 250 feline deaths, and several human deaths from rabies. Worldwide, some 55,000 human deaths occur annually from rabies, so it remains an important and nearly untreatable illness even now in the 21st century.
- Veterinary OphthalmologyAt times, your pet may need more extensive testing or treatment than what we here at WVG can provide. As veterinary medicine has become more advanced, there are now many fields in which veterinarians can choose to pursue further training and become specialized in. In some situations, we may refer you and your pet to one of the above hospitals for specialty care, such as Internal Medicine, Surgery, Cardiology, Oncology, Dermatology, or Ophthalmology. We then collaborate with the specialty doctors at these hospitals so that your pet can get the best care possible.
- Behavioral Counseling
- Comprehensive ExaminationCan’t come in, but would like an E-mail consultation? These are available for an appointment fee. If the consultation determines that the fish needs a physical exam +/- diagnostics to be helped, the cost of the e-mail consultation will be credited towards your office visit fee.
- Parasites Treatment and Control○ Pros: Bugs are exposed to active ingredient on contact, and in most cases start dying before biting. Advantix contains a repellent ingredient that deters mosquitoes and flies in addition to fleas and ticks.
- Pain ManagementWe take anesthesia very seriously at WVG. From light sedation to calm your pet for less painful procedures, to full general anesthesia for surgeries and dental procedures, your pet is monitored closely by a dedicated technician and doctor. Each pet's breed, age, and complicating health factors are given careful consideration before deciding on their individualized anesthetic plan. We use the safest available medications and advanced monitoring equipment to minimize any risks associated with anesthesia. We are also dedicated to providing appropriate pain relief through the use of regional nerve blocks and multimodal analgesia for any painful procedures. We know anesthesia can cause some worry, but want to reassure you that your pet is being cared for with safe and modern anesthetic practices.
- Vomiting Treatment
- Skin Condition and Allergy TreatmentAs veterinary professionals, our job is to help our clients compare pros and cons to figure out what is best for their family situation. Regardless of the product chosen, we recommend using it consistently year-round. How do we know it is working? We should not find any engorged/embedded ticks or fleas/flea dirt on the pet. In general, side effects are uncommon when the product is used as licensed, but individual sensitivities have been reported. Beware of counterfeit and lookalike products sold online; please purchase preventatives from licensed veterinary pharmacies and distributors. Avoid “grocery store brands” such as Hartz and Sergeant. “Natural” products often have not been tested for safety and efficacy, and have been associated with skin irritation and liver disease.
- Injury Treatment
- Leptospirosis Treatment
- Parvovirus Infection Treatment
- Bacterial and Viral Infection TreatmentIn my area (Los Angeles), if the biting animal has been legally vaccinated against rabies, only routine first aid may be necessary; bacterial infection of the wound may still be possible. If the animal has not been currently vaccinated, it must be confined for 10 days at the owner's expense for observation and then vaccinated at the end of that period.
- Periodontal Disease TreatmentPeriodontal disease is one of the most common diseases in our veterinary patients. In this pathologic process, bacteria infect the structures that hold the teeth in place, causing destruction of gum tissue and bone. This is often painful, and eventually leads to tooth decay and loss. Periodontal problems revealed by dental X-rays include tooth root abscesses and bone loss.
