- OphthalmologyTo keep up with the changing city, the growing demands of the community, and the advancements in medicine, in 1990 we began to offer much more specialized ophthalmic care and in 2006 we became the first ophthalmic practice in Wilmington to offer pediatric ophthalmology. Dr. David Johnson, MD, Ph.D. spent 13 years as Wilmington’s only pediatric ophthalmologist, where his leadership and medical expertise paved the road for pediatric ophthalmic care in the Cape Fear region.
- Macular DegenerationMany ocular diseases, like glaucoma and macular degeneration, do not immediately affect your vision or show any symptoms, making it easy for them to go unnoticed. According to the Center for Disease Control, an estimated 93 million adults in the US are at high risk for vision loss but only half have visited the eye doctor in the past year. During your medical eye exam, your doctor will conduct several diagnostic tests to determine if any ocular diseases are present and get to the root of your vision complaint or problem.
- Laser Eye Surgery"Dr. Leone is a sweetheart and I would recommend her to anyone who wants to be treated with respect and care. Very personable and an excellent surgeon who walked me through my LASIK surgery with ease and comfort. Thanks for my new eyes!"
- CataractsCataracts are one of the leading causes of visual problems in adults over 60. While harmless at first, as cataracts progress, they can begin to negatively impact your vision. It can become increasingly difficult to focus on objects, bright colors seem to dull, and seeing at night can become a challenge. When the quality of your vision begins to put limitations on your daily activities, it may be time to do something about your cataracts.
- Cataract SurgeryIn 2013, the physicians of Wilmington Eye achieved another incredible feat. Dr. Kathleen Leone, Navy veteran, and board-certified ophthalmic surgeon, became the first local surgeon to introduce laser-assisted cataract surgery to Wilmington. This new form of cataract surgery drastically improved cataract surgery, making it safer and more effective for patients while improving their surgical outcomes.
- Eye ExamIf you think your child may have an eye problem, it’s imperative that a full vision eye exam take place with a pediatric ophthalmologist. Early detection and treatment in children can help prevent lifelong vision loss. As a parent, it’s important to familiarize yourself with common vision problems that occur among children so that you can work with your child’s pediatrician to identify a potential vision problem and seek the right care and treatment.

- Diabetic RetinopathyIf you have been diagnosed with diabetes, you are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy involves progressive damage to the blood vessels of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue in the back of your eye. Without proper disease management and regular eye exams from an optometrist, diabetic retinopathy can lead to blindness. In fact, it is the leading cause of blindness in American adults, and it’s estimated that 50% of patients with diabetes are not receiving regular eye exams.

- Plastic SurgeryThe quality of your vision is directly related to the function of the skin and structures surrounding your eyes. By combining ophthalmic and plastic surgery principles, oculoplastic surgery can not only improve the clarity and overall quality of your vision, but it can also improve your appearance, leading to a more rejuvenated appearance.
- BlepharoplastySometimes, surgery may be required to improve your vision. Whether that surgery is elective—like LASIK or PRK —or medically necessary to correct vision loss due to cataracts or glaucoma, your optometrist can identify when vision surgery is required, work with your ophthalmic surgeon to develop a treatment plan, and handle all post-operative care once your surgery is complete. Post-operative care is extremely important to your overall vision to ensure that all surgical outcomes have been achieved and that your vision has improved. A Wilmington Eye optometrist offers post-operative care for vision correction procedures, cataract surgery, blepharoplasty surgery, strabismus, and more.
