- Prostate CancerA prostate exam is a screening test to detect signs of prostate cancer. Our providers often recommend that men over the age of 45 receive a prostate exam along with prostate-specific antigen (PSA) screenings to detect early signs of prostate cancer. PSA is a protein that is produced by cancerous and noncancerous prostate gland cells. A PSA test measures the levels of this antigen in a man’s blood. High levels of this antigen may indicate prostate cancer earlier than a prostate exam. PSA screenings may also detect other conditions, including inflammation of the prostate and benign prostatic hyperplasia (enlargement of the prostate.)
