      Founded in 1919, Smith Frozen Foods has more than 250,000 square feet of cold storage space, with a capacity of holding more than 130 million pounds of product. Peas go from field to freezer within two hours. Corn is in the freezer within four hours. These advantages have made it possible for Smith Frozen Foods to represent an average of eight to 15 percent of all United States frozen peas, corn and diced carrots. The company has implemented hazard analysis critical control points and continues to refine methods of checking and controlling product quality. Its checkpoints begin in the field, where the company tests soils. In the plant, Smith continually evaluates methods. When it determines new ways to eliminate foreign materials from vegetables, the company buys the equipment to meet the requirements. In the lab, temperatures of products are checked regularly during repacking and freezing. Smith Frozen Foods is located in Weston, Ore.
