  The sciatic nerve is the largest nerve in the body. It originates in the lumbar (lower back) region of the spine and runs down the buttocks, backs of the thighs, and lower legs. The important job of the sciatic nerve is to supply the leg and foot with nervous system intervention. The term sciatica is used to describe pain or other symptoms that are caused by the compression of sciatic nerve roots in the lumbar spine.

  The spinal cord runs from the brain to lumbar region of the spine. Nerve branches of the spinal cord exit spinal vertebrae to supply the muscles and organs of the body with nervous system intervention.   An epidural steroid injection (ESI) is a minimally invasive procedure that can help relieve neck, arm, back, and leg pain caused by inflamed spinal nerves. ESI may be performed to relieve pain caused by spinal stenosis, spondylolysis, or disc degeneration or herniation. The effects of ESI tend to be temporary.
