- AntsCarpenter Ants can be very damaging to the structure of your home and they are very common in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Carpenter Ants are among the largest ants and are black or dark brownish-red colored. They prefer damp environments so they survive quite nicely with our weather near the coast. Warmer weather and moisture in the spring attracts carpenter ants as they look for a new home. Carpenter ants tunnel through wood and in large numbers can cause major damage to your home. They are about ¼†-⅜†long. The queen can lay up to 15-20 eggs at a time, while the workers expand their home by digging through the wood. They cause billions of dollars of damage each year. If you see one, chances are there is already a colony set up, damaging wood in or around the outside of your home.
- SpidersTicks are related to mites, spiders and scorpions, but are not considered an insect. Ticks have eight legs and insects have only six. Ticks develop in four stages: egg, larva, nymphs and adult. After mating on a host, female ticks drop to the ground then lay anywhere from 3,000 to 6,000 eggs. The eggs then hatch into larvae which are also referred to as seed ticks. Larvae collect in large groups and wait for an animal to pass within reach. After feeding on the host, the larvae then drop to the ground again and shed their skins. The larvae have now turned into nymphs. A nymph follows the same process as the larvae in the way that it finds a host to feed on then, drops to the ground and sheds its skin. However, at this time, the nymph will become an adult. Adult ticks will then seek a host to feed and mate. Adult ticks will only mate while on a host animal. Male ticks will mate one or more times and then usually die, but some may live for months after mating. Female ticks die shortly after the process of laying eggs. Certain ticks can have a life cycle from two months or up to two years.

They can even be attracted to minute deposits of sugar, grease, and pet food that get stuck in hard-to-reach places like under sinks and cabinets.

- BeesCarpenter bees are similar to bumble bees, however they are large, shiny and black, not fuzzy as a bumble bee. These bees can also be aggressive if you are around their nests. However, males do not have stingers. These bees make their nests around the wood of your patio or deck. They can be destructive, as they drill holes into the wood in order to keep their eggs.
- WaspsPaper wasps, fly slower than bees and their legs dangle underneath them as they fly. Wasps can sting repeatedly and have a much more painful sting. They make their nests, in doorways, eaves, railings, shutters, or anywhere there is a small space.

- HornetsYellow jackets, or hornets, are the slim yellow and black striped bees that are a type of wasp and can sting repeatedly. They can build homes, which are usually not completely visible, a couple inches inside a structure. The yellow jackets will be visible going in and out, and may be audible as they are rustling and eating through the wall to expand their nest. They make large cone-shaped hives that are protected by a paper covering that they make. These nests are often in high places like in trees or on the side of exterior walls and roofs. They can hold thousands of hornets and are aggressive when their nest is disturbed. Types of yellow jackets can also make their home a couple inches within the ground, and get aggressive when it is disturbed. Unlike the honey bee, the yellow jackets are annual, so they will not set up and remain in their nest for years. They may be the strongest and most painful stingers of this group. Being a type of wasp, they can also sting repeatedly.
- Yellowjackets
- MothsThese bats are insectivores. Insectivores will feed primarily at night, catching thousands of mosquitoes, moths and other night-flying insects while in flight. It is estimated that an individual bat can eat 600 insects per hour and many of these are insects that people regard as pests.

- Stinging InsectsBees, hornets and wasps are in the same family of flying, stinging insects. Although crucial in the pollinating process of plant growth, they can be a real nuisance and a hazard. If a bee, hornet or wasp sets up a nest or hive in your yard where your children play, or near an outdoor eating area where employees eat their lunch, it can be dangerous. Many people are allergic to these stinging insects and it can turn into an emergency. Pesky bees and wasps nests are best to be handled by the professionals who are trained to do so in a contained manner, without making the bees aggressive.

The big brown bat’s body ranges from 5 1/2 to 8 inches in length with a 12 to 11¼ inch wingspan.

- RodentsSharing a classroom with insects and rodents is not a valuable lesson children need to learn in school.
