This small, clean, air conditioned restaurant has now been open a little over a year and seems to be doing a thriving business. The main floor where one enters has a counter to place your order, a small bar with about eight stools, three tables for two, and one table for four; the second floor, empty of patrons at the time of our visit, has more seating. Off to the right side of the main floor is a large lobster holding area containing a number of submerged crates, sorting the different sizes of live lobsters. Outside the front of the restaurant, abutting busy Main Street, is an area offering more seating at a few umbrella-covered picnic tables.

We were greeted by an attractive, friendly and helpful young woman named Brooke. After we perused the blackboard menu located behind the counter (they have no printed menus) and checked out the day’s specials (on another chalkboard near the counter), she promptly took our order, advising us that we would get a better deal if we chose two orders of the daily special: 3 clam fritters with a 12-ounce cup of chowder for $6 (thanks, Brooke!). Please note that Manhattan-style red chowder is also available. We also ordered two pounds of regular steamed clams with broth and drawn butter ($18.00) to share, and a bottle of Bud Light ($3). The routine here is to order and pay at the counter, take a seat and wait for your name to be called and then pick up your order. Since the weather was so nice we opted to sit at an outdoor picnic table, and instead of us going to pick up our order as is the normal routine, Brooke and another server kindly brought it to out to us.

About the food: The clam fritters were very large, hot and delicious, rife with pieces of clams. The New England-style clam chowder was one of the best we’ve had: perfectly thick and creamy, loaded with clams and not too many potato chunks, with a pretty good amount of heat from either cayenne pepper or hot sauce. While my sister and I enjoyed the chowder’s “zip,” we felt that other diners may not enjoy this spicy version. The steamers were very good as well. Most were of medium size and totally devoid of sand---some of the cleanest we’ve ever encountered. During one of the three times Brooke checked on us during our meal, we requested a bit more broth for the clams, which she promptly brought to us. I don’t believe Lobster Nook offers any desserts other than ice cream (newly added) as I can’t remember seeing any listed on the blackboard menu. Even if there were, we would have declined, being happily stuffed to the gills.

In sum, our dining experience at Lobster Nook was very enjoyable. We found the service to be friendly and accommodating, the seafood fresh and delicious, the portions substantial and prices very reasonable. The menu is large and typically clam shack-style, which we love. The only negative is the lack of parking: we secured a spot on the street directly in front of the Nook only because we arrived just before 5 p.m. As only on-street parking is available, later arrivals will find parking problematic. We’ll return to sample other menu offerings, probably at an early hour again. We give an enthusiastic “two thumbs up” and would highly recommend Lobster Nook to anyone who enjoys good seafood in a casual atmosphere.
