The Uptown Theater is absolutely the best place to see anything which is cinematographically or visually stunning. It boasts the largest screen in the DC area -- the screen is 32 feet tall and 70 feet wide; it also features Deco original architecture, a really large balcony that provides excellent viewing, and all the classic trappings of a quintessential movie house. Warner Brothers opened it 29 October 1936. Currently it shows first run, blockbuster films, but may also host significant restored, re-released films.

Grand old theater, showing its age

The Uptown is what all good theaters used to be. Not a cookie cutter multiplex, there is one good, large screen, one cavernous auditorium, and an actual balcony (where the best seats are, especially if you're on a date!). The entrance is suitably old-time flashy, there are little architectural flourishes throughout. They play first run features (usually the blockbusters). And sound - GREAT sound. But since being taken over by the AMC-Lowes chain, the Uptown has been allowed to slide a bit. A few seats are in serious need of repair, and the whoie place could use a good rehad. Nonetheless, it remains my favorite movie theater in DC. Parking is difficult, but it's only half a block from the Metro (Cleveland Park station on the Red Line).
