Founded in 1970, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) works to protect and enhance the environment and natural resources to prevent, abate and control water, land and air pollution. The department works with a team of more than 3,500 staff members. It manages over15 divisions and offices. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation operates a division of forest protection that is responsible for the preservation, protection and enhancement of forest resources. Its division of solid and hazardous materials regulates and monitors the solid and hazardous waste facilities and generators of hazardous waste, as well as controls the disposal of radioactive materials.
