General Info
Bethel Presbyterian Church was founded in 1805 by Rev. Andrew Brown and Gen. Andrew Pickens. The history of this church charts a community’s faith journey, making this a journey with a Significant Other. Gen. Pickens was not only a soldier, a statesman, an Indian fighter, and a pioneer, but he was also a man of strong faith. Everywhere they lived Gen. Pickens and his wife, Rebecca Calhoun, participated in the founding of a Presbyterian Church. Pickens then became a ruling elder in those churches: Upper Long Cane Presbyterian Church in Abbeville County (1763), Hopewell Presbyterian Church in Pendleton (1789) and Bethel Presbyterian Church in what is now Oconee County (1805). Gen. Pickens influence on the lives of the men and their families who lived with him in Granville County (Abbeville District), served with him during the Revolutionary War, and followed him to the Golden Corner of South Carolina cannot be overstated. It was most fitting that when the new district embracing this territory was formed in 1826 it should be given in his name. And when Pickens District was divided in 1868, Pickens County also took his name, as Pickens County, Alabama, had done in 1819 and Pickens County, Georgia, in 1853. Pickens resided at Tamassee for twenty-three years until his death on August 11, 1817. In fact, most of the original ruling elders and heads of households died or moved away in the first fifteen years. So it is the events and characters that remained or came soon after which make up what has now become Bethel Presbyterian Church.
