  Expertise Dr. Todd Carter is Board Certified in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery as well as Dental Anesthesiology. He is certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS). Dr. Carter is licensed by the State of Hawaii to provide general anesthesia.

  Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last teeth in the mouth to develop and erupt (break through the gums). Generally this occurs between the ages of 17 and 25. With the many benefits of modern dental care, orthodontics, and changes in the human diet, most people lack the space in their mouth to accommodate the third molars. Additionally, wisdom teeth are located far back in the mouth making them hard to reach and keep clean.Numerous problems can occur with wisdom teeth including cavities, periodontal disease (such as gum infections), crowding of teeth, and inference with dental work or orthodontics. Moreover, not all problems with wisdom teeth are obvious or painful, yet damage may be being done without your being aware. Prevention of these problems, or catching and treating them early on, is important for your overall health and quality of life.

  Some services are typically not covered by dental insurance companies. These include: cosmetic dentistry, implants, occlusion or bite redesign, and other services. Although these are important dental services that can greatly enhance the quality of life of our patients, dental insurance companies do not feel that they should have to pay for these services. That is why these services are rarely included in contracts with your employer.

  Richard Rasmussen, DDS was born and raised in the Chicago, IL area. He did his undergraduate studies at the University of Illinois at Champaign Urbana. He earned his D.D.S. (Doctor of Dental Surgery) at the University of Illinois in 1971. He then completed a general practice residency at St. Francis Hospital in Honolulu. He practiced general dentistry in Kilua-Kona, HI from 1974-1976. He then entered the Oral & Maxillofacial surgery residency program at Truman Medical Center, Kansas City, MS. Dr. Rasmussen entered private practice in Wailuku in 1979 as Maui’s first oral surgeon.
