The Library We Want

General Info

Serving the village of Valatie, the hamlet of Niverville, Kinderhook Lake, and rural Kinderhook in Columbia County along the scenic Hudson River Valley of New York State. The Valatie Free Library is a supportive guide and learning template for young children and adults; a place for contemplative reading; a computer and online information resource; a community hub. During the past ten years, the Valatie Free Library has seen a literal explosion of activity; in 2002, the library offered just six programs for the public; last year, almost 140. Program attendance is up more than 1000 percent. Our need for a larger space to properly attend to this growth is solved by our forthcoming Sustainable Library project, which will increase our operational space without increasing our operations budget. The VFL's forthcoming Capital Construction project, an iconic and near-Net-Zero hybrid library building. Created through the retrofit and expansion of the Kinderhook Steam Railroad Freight Barn on Rt 9, the new library will include an energized landscape of learning and access to information for all age groups as well as provide a centralized location and facility that meets multiple community needs, i.e. community hub for the chartered district of the Valatie Free Library. As a member of the Mid-Hudson Library System (MHLS), VFL provides access to over 2.5 million items (books, DVDs, etc.).
