- OphthalmologyOphthalmologists have long cautioned against purchasing toys that pose a danger to children’s eyes. This year we’re adding digital devices to our usual list of BB guns, Nerf guns, and slingshots. That’s because evidence is mounting that too much screen time and not enough time outside may be behind the recent rise in nearsightedness in children. We know reducing screen time has been especially challenging for parents during the pandemic. To help, the American Academy of Ophthalmology released a screen-free holiday gift guide focused on healthy kids and healthy eyes.
- Macular Degeneration
- Laser Eye SurgeryLASIK surgery is a procedure that utilizes a laser to reshape the cornea (the windshield to the eye) to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. It is important for patients to understand that no eye surgical procedure is risk-free. Over 30 years of experience however, have indicated a high level of both safety and efficacy associated with both LASIK and PRK.
- CataractsA cataract is a clouding or opacification of the lens of the eye. The lens is located directly behind the pupil and is mandatory for the correct focusing of images onto the retina. As the lens becomes cloudy, vision diminishes and there is often a progressive decrease in one’s ability to see things clearly.
- Cataract SurgeryAs cataracts develop it is often possible to change one’s glasses prescription to reacquire clear vision but eventually if the cataract becomes dense enough, it is not possible to correct by changing the prescription. Cataract surgery may become the only way to re-establish clear vision. Certain diseases such as diabetes are associated with an increased incidence of cataracts.

- Eyelid SurgeryCosmetic surgery is a large part of oculoplastic surgery. Nobody understands the eyelids like an oculoplastic surgeon. When considering cosmetic eyelid surgery, it is always important to remember that the function of the eyelids is to protect the eyeballs. The eyelids are an integral segment of the vision system, and cosmetic surgery of the eyelids should never compromise ocular health.
- Plastic SurgeryOculoplastic surgeons are experts in eyelid, orbit and lacrimal surgery. An oculoplastic surgeon is a board-certified ophthalmologist who has completed further fellowship training in plastic surgery of the periocular area. This field of medicine is devoted to treating problems of the eyelids, eye socket and lacrimal system.
- BlepharoplastyAs ophthalmologists, we understand that the eyelids are an integral part of vision. A drooping or heavy upper eyelid can block vision. When the eyelid is affecting vision, an oculoplastic surgeon can help by correcting the anatomic deformity. Blepharoplasty and ptosis repair are two of the most common procedures that are performed. Surgery on blocked tear ducts, eyelid skin cancers, and orbital trauma and tumors are also very common problems addressed by the oculoplastic surgeon.
