  Medical School was followed by a five full years of General Surgery training and an additional year committed to Plastic Surgery research at the Medical College of Virginia. Dr. Nelson’s research involved the science of how wounds heal, burn research, and the new realm of fetal surgery and wound healing. With kids and family in tow, Dr. Nelson then moved to San Diego for training in Plastic Surgery, which was followed by a microsurgery fellowship in Melbourne, Australia.
• Ear Surgery
  Most children’s ears are fully grown and developed by the age of five or six. By this age, patients can successfully undergo ear surgery for prominent ears or congenital defects. Non-surgical ear treatment is also available for newborns. More often than not, overly large or prominent ears are detectable as soon as your baby is born. During the first few months of their life, their ears are still malleable and able to be reshaped without surgery or discomfort to the child. By using specially designed headbands and other form-fitting devices, the cartilage can be reshaped and repositioned to a more conventional size and position against the head.

• Botox
  The most recognized are the injections used to weaken muscle movement and soften wrinkles. These are Botox® Cosmetic, Dysport®, and the new kid on the block, Xeomin®. Botox® has been around for a long time and was used initially to stop facial twitching, spasmed muscles from strokes, tight neck muscles (torticollis), and other medical problems related to overactive muscles. The “Botox® protein” can interfere with muscle contraction to soften the muscles used for facial animation, so we don’t show wrinkles around the eyes, between the brows, on the forehead, or other areas of the face. In fact, it was when Botox® was used in the face for medical purposes that people noticed that facial wrinkles looked better, so the treatments transitioned to also being used for cosmetic purposes.

  Each approach has it’s good points and down sides (isn’t that true of everything), and your hairline, wrinkles, anatomy, and hair growth may all enter into the decision as to which location will be best. So, three different patients coming to the office for a brow lift might each get a different approach used for their brow lift; “one size does not fit everyone.”

  H.A. products are clear gels that are used to fill volume or add a little substance to where they are injected. H.A. products are commonly used to fill specific wrinkles, for lip augmentation, fill in the folds on the side of your nose to the corner of your mouth (nasolabial folds), or give volume to any spot that could use a little fill. Since hyaluronic acid is a natural part of your skin, it doesn’t require any skin testing and replaces some of the loss of H.A. in your face that occurs from aging and sun damage. These products come in slightly different densities, so the length of time they hang around varies. We use different H.A.’s in different areas depending on the individual product’s characteristics. The products typically last between six months to one year depending on the area injected and the type of H.A. used.

  The next two products last a bit longer, but serve slightly different purposes than the H.A. products. Radiesse® is an excellent injectable for longer acting filling. It is frequently used for the nasolabial folds, cheek or chin augmentation, or other facial areas that might benefit from a deeper fill. Radiesse® is not an ideal product for the finer superficial lines, which is why we often use different products in different areas of the face. Radiesse® can do an excellent job also for hand filling, especially to help hide large veins of the hands. Radiesse® typically last 12 to 18 months and on occasion up to two years.
• Forehead Lift
  The brow lift is also called the forehead lift, brow plasty, or forehead plasty; they mean the same thing, and this procedure is used to soften the forehead’s transverse lines, decrease the vertical scowl lines between the brows, and reposition the brow to a slightly higher and better position. Since the skin below the brow connects to the skin of the upper eye lid, a brow lift may make the eyes appear more open and youthful. As a plastic surgeon, Dr. Nelson considers the brow/forehead area as a separate anatomical area from the area treated with the classic face lift. A brow lift may be an appropriate procedure to add as part of a face lift procedure, but it is not inherently part of a face lift because many patients don’t need a brow lift with their face lift.
