      The Community Development Department is responsible for the management of building and planning activities, including environmental, redevelopment, engineering permits and records, housing activities, and mapping and survey information. The department operates a redevelopment agency that reconstructs commercial, industrial and residential developments. The Community Development Department maintains an environmental division that helps to preserve the appearance, character and quality of neighborhoods. It is also enforces zoning, land use, unpermitted building and nuisance codes. The department works with the Planning Commission and prepares plans and zoning studies. The Community Development Department additionally supports several housing programs. It is located in Torrance, Calif.
