- Primary CareThe audiologist will also examine your ear canals and eardrums for problems including holes in your eardrum, signs of infection in your ear canal or middle ear, and any other abnormalities in your ear. If necessary, we will refer you to a medical doctor, most likely your primary care or an ear specialist, for treatment. Remember, audiologists assess hearing; they do not treat ears medically.
- Ear InfectionsA – Tinnitus, or ringing in the ear is not a disease, but a symptom which can result from a wide range of underlying causes, including: prolonged exposure to abnormally loud sounds in the ear canal, ear infections, foreign objects in the ear, nasal allergies which prevent (or induce) fluid drain, or wax build-up. Tinnitus can also be noticed as part of the natural aging process, as a side effect of some medications or of genetic hearing loss. However, the most common cause is noise-induced hearing loss.
- Sleep DisordersTinnitus also known as “ringing in the ears” is the perception of sounds which are not produced by a source outside of the body. Tinnitus is a “phantom” auditory perception generated somewhere in the auditory pathways. Individuals may describe these sensations as “ringing”, “buzzing”, “roaring”, “hissing”, or “rushing”. The prevalence of tinnitus is about 10 – 15% of the adult population, however only about 20% of adults are affected by tinnitus. Tinnitus can affect or interfere with an individual’s ability to hear, concentrate, and/or sleep at night. Untreated tinnitus may lead to sleep disorders, depression, PTSD, anxiety, anger, and other psychological effects.
- Multiple SclerosisInner ear disorders like Meniere’s Disease, benign positional vertigo, endolymphatic hydrops, and perilymph fistula can be hard to diagnose as their symptoms can be rather vague. Balance can impact your ability to walk, stand, read, and think clearly. It can also cause other issues like vomiting, nausea or weight gain due to an inability to exercise. As a result, these issues can be misdiagnosed as clinical depression, multiple sclerosis and a number of other ailments.
