- General Info
- A visit to Mission San Luis transports you back in time to the 17th century. Your destination is a community where Apalachee Indians and newcomers from Spain lived and worked together. See 300 year-old artifacts found on site, experience the largest historic Indian structure in the Southeast, learn the stories of San Luis from guides in period dress, shop for unique gifts in the museum store, or just bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day with your family and friends on 63 beautiful acres! MORE ABOUT MISSION SAN LUIS ~ Mission San Luis functioned as the capital of the western missions in La Florida from 1656 to 1704. Populated by more than 1500 residents, including one of the most powerful Apalachee chiefs and the Spanish deputy governor, San Luis was one of early Florida’s largest colonial outposts. In recognition of its historical significance, San Luis received designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1960. Since that time, the Mission has been the focus of intensive archaeological and historical research, and today is the most thoroughly-investigated mission in the southeastern United States. Join us in exploring native culture and Spanish colonization in a meticulously recreated landscape.
