We took our vehicle to be inspected at the Statesville location. The Mooresville location is also owned by the same franchisee therefore managed by the same individual, Brett Middlebrook, son of the owner Gary Middlebrook. The inspector, John Goodman, (who is also an assistant manager to the Statesville store) failed our vehicle citing that the windshield wipers failed. The manager at the Statesville location, Billy, then tried to sell us wipers for $16 each in order to pass the inspection. The wipers have been functioning properly and safely over the past 10 days of rain we have received in the area, and there is no evidence that they are unsafe. They are not cracked or worn in any way, and they remove water and debris without streaking. I’m unclear how the wipers were deemed unsafe. The only obvious reason a shop would do such a thing is to try to up-sell other products in order to make more money and take advantage of customers. We were told that they could not pass the vehicle until new wipers were installed. We were charged $23.75, and we left that station and had the vehicle inspected at another shop less than an hour later. The vehicle passed that inspection without any issues and we were charged the $30 inspection fee. We took that passed inspection back to the Valvoline station to ask for a refund for the $23.75, and the manager, Billy, refused. We told Billy that we would dispute the charge, and Billy told us that he would take us to court if we did so. I spoke with Brett MIddlebrook, the owners son, who also said he could not refund the money. He told me that I would have to take my car to a DMV office to have it inspected by them, and they would have to issue me a letter stating that my vehicle should have passed, and only then could he issue me a refund. I took my vehicle to the DMV station, and I was informed that the inspectors were only there from 8am-10am Tues-Thurs, so I could not get my vehicle inspected by them. I later spoke to a DMV customer service representative in Raleigh, and I was told that I would just have to file a complaint online and they would investigate. I have done so, and I am still awaiting a resolution. I would not recommend this or any of the Valvoline stations in the area if your are looking for competent and ethical customer service.
