Originally from Chicago, Dr. Latrice Akuamoah first moved to New York state for her B.S. in molecular genetics at the University of Rochester. After graduating, she moved to New Orleans where she received her M.D. and M.P.H. from Tulane University School of Medicine. She went on to complete her internship at Maryland General Hospital in Baltimore before returning to New York for her residency in anesthesiology at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City. Most recently, she completed a fellowship in pain management at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in Pennsylvania. As a result of Dr. Akuamoah’s background in public health, she has developed an “educate, treat, and prevent” approach to pain management. First, she recognizes the burden that chronic pain has on a large and growing percentage of the population; many of whom suffer on a day-to-day basis unaware of new and targeted treatment options. Dr. Akuamoah takes the time to carefully listen to all of her patients so that she can better understand their concerns and educate them on their respective conditions. This ensures that the patient is at the center of the solution. Second, she understands the unique impact that pain has on each individual’s life. For this reason, she strives to develop individualized treatment plans that take into account her patients’ diverse needs and lifestyles. Finally, Dr. Akuamoah is committed to improving patients’ quality of life and, whenever possible, preventing the development or worsening of chronic pain. Dr. Akuamoah performs a complete evaluation of each patient. She uses an evidence-based multimodal approach to pain management often recommending behavioral therapy, physical therapy, medications, and cutting edge minimally invasive procedures, when necessary.
