South Lake Tahoe Jail houses pre-sentenced and post-sentenced male and female defendants. It is a 150-plus-detention facility that provides transportation for jail inmates to court proceedings, medical appointments and custodial institutes. The jail also administers several work programs. South Lake Tahoe Jail is a part of the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office, which has administrate and investigation divisions. Its custody division works to ensure public safety through the safe and secure incarceration of inmates. The sheriff's office also maintains a patrol division that is responsible for offering law enforcement solutions and covers an area of more than 1800 square miles.
