- GlaucomaGlaucoma is a disease in which there is damage to the optic nerve, usually resulting from chronically high pressures inside the eye. The optic nerve receives the visual image from the retina and sends the image to the brain. The brain interprets this image as sight. Some patients have glaucoma, even though their pressure is “normal.†These patients have “low tension glaucoma.†Their optic nerves have an increased susceptibility to damage and need to have their eye pressure lower than normal to prevent progression of damage.

He has been a board certified fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology since 1983 and is a member of The American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, the Fairfield County Medical Society, The American Medical Association and The Connecticut Society of Eye Physicians. Dr. Pinke. is also the senior attending ophthalmologist at Griffin Hospital and founding member and medical director of The Connecticut Eye Surgery Center, South, located in Milford, Connecticut.
- Macular DegenerationPinke Eye Center located in Shelton, CT provides comprehensive eye care to patients of all ages. Our services include not only laser vision correction and small-incision cataract surgery but also treatments for a range of conditions such as glaucoma, the diabetic eye, dry eye and macular degeneration.
- Laser Eye SurgeryJames R. Pinke, M.D. offers several laser surgical procedures for glaucoma as well as standard trabeculectomy surgery, express mini shunts and iStent for advanced glaucoma that cannot be controlled with medications or laser. Most of the laser surgery is performed at the Shelton office, while some laser procedures are conducted at the Connecticut Eye Surgery Center.
- CataractsThe natural lens is removed via an incision so small, it seals itself without the need for stitches. The cataract lens is gently removed using a delicate micro-surgical technique, called phacoemulsification. The permanent intra-ocular lens implant is gently inserted in place of the cataract that was removed. The procedure is fast, with virtually no discomfort, and vision is generally improved almost immediately. Most patients are thrilled with their dramatically improved ability to see near and far without glasses.
- Cataract SurgeryLaser assisted cataract surgery adds an extra level of precision to the operation. Most patients are candidates for this newest evolution in cataract surgery. Incisions are made with a laser instead of a blade. The opening of the “bag†of the cataract is made with the laser, and the cataract is softened with the laser as well. Although each of these steps in the procedure have traditionally been performed very well, by the surgeons hands, no surgeon can match the precision that the laser can bring to these steps of the operation. In addition, patients with small amounts of astigmatism can have this refractive problem corrected much more precisely with laser.
- Eye ExamThe best way to combat glaucoma is prevention, and that comes from early diagnosis and treatment. A thorough eye examination by an Ophthalmologist is the only way for you to know if you have this initially asymptomatic, yet progressive condition. The main initial treatment strategy is eye drop medication or laser. At The Pinke Eye Center in Shelton, CT, we individualize treatment for each patient and monitor the effectiveness of treatment on an ongoing basis. Some patients do better with initial laser treatment, some do better with eye drops, and some need a combination of treatments. Some patients have more advanced disease that requires outpatient operating room surgery. James R. Pinke, M.D. sees all of his patients at every visit and performs all treatments and surgical procedures himself. He believes that this continuity of care provides his patients with the highest quality treatment both short and long term. At the Pinke Center for Eye Heath, patients can be assured that they will not be directed to see an optometrist or other eye care professional that they didn’t expect to see that day.
