I noticed Sue and her talent when she was at Conway School, and she has worked for me and with me as a colleague ever since then. High standards for quality, perceptive analysis skills, graceful designs for site planning, and excellent client rapport.

I’ve known and worked with Sue Reed in a variety of contexts for over 20 years now, and I’ve yet to meet a more creative and thoughtful designer, writer, and teacher. Whether helping her survey a local job site, review a chapter on the significance of driveway construction, or brainstorm potential solutions to a challenging design problem, I have learned more from helping Sue in the field or at her drafting table than I have in many a classroom setting. 

With an incredible capacity for problem-solving, Sue has transformed the landscapes of countless clients’ outdoor spaces, drawing on her extensive knowledge of native plants, her commitment to sustainability, and her patient and professional nature. As an architect, she does her research, presents numerous solutions, and works with her clients until she finds a design that best suits their needs while also working tirelessly to preserve the integrity of the New England landscape. Sue has created for herself, with diligence and ingenuity, both a portfolio and a reputation of great influence and inspiration.

As a general contractor, I've worked with Sue Reed on several projects. She's an effective leader and a team player as well. She demands extremely high performance from all her associates but cooperates and compromises when it serves the clients best interests. Her extensive knowledge informs all of us and helps make good projects great. I recommend her without reservation and look forward to learning more from her on future endeavors.

Sue stands head and shoulders above many landscape designers with her concern for the planet, eye for beauty, and professional ethics. She incorporates the wishes of the client into sustainable design that improves any landscape and not only benefits the human experience but provides habitat for all the rest of our planet's inhabitants, plants and animals alike. She is a true friend of the Earth.

The practice of landscape architecture takes into consideration many more aspects than either my husband or I realized when we decided to do a redesign. Thank goodness we hired Sue! She not only listened to what we wanted but then took us through the various elements we needed to consider to make it all work. Always professional, timely and thorough, Sue was a joy to work with. We were very pleased with the results and continue to marvel at our beautiful yet seemless new landscape everyday!

In addition to the creative talent that Susan brings to her sustainable design projects, she has proven to be totally professional. I can't say enough about her ability to listen carefully (and we had plenty to say) to our concerns and interests which she incorporated into a number of solutions that felt very personal to us. We enjoyed collaborating with her because she made us feel integral to her creative process. We used her for some residential design on a difficult site, and I would gladly use her again. Her negotiations were honest, and her sense of humor just enriched the entire experience. I cannot recommend her highly enough.

In the spring of 2014 we engaged Susan Reed to design a landscape plan for our property. Through the spring and summer we went through a multi-stepped process through which she came up with a design we loved. She was extremely professional, and personable, throughout. She offered us many very creative ideas, and was very responsive to our concerns and considerations. The process she followed - and what we were charged - was exactly what she had explained to us at the beginning.



She then recommended a wonderful landscaper to install the design, and she guided his work through two months of construction in the fall. They worked together extremely well, and her time onsite and in communication with him seemed very efficiently spent and productive. It was invaluable to have her input during construction, because she asked for changes from him that he and we would have missed. He would have done a very good job, but the combination of the two of them working together yielded an excellent finish.

Sue Reed is an extremely talented landscape architect and an incredible problem solver when it come to residential landscape challenges. She has an incredible knowledge of native plants and is a driveway realignment guru.

I have worked with Ms. Reed on a couple of occasions through twenty-five years of knowing of her and her excellent work. I have recommended her to a number of clients and friends in western Massachusetts and eastern NY state, having confidence in her deliberate and careful design, as well as professional client interface. She is meticulous in her planning for comfortable egress, has tremendous knowledge of local building materials and indigenous plants, and creates outdoor spaces that feel immediately "at home." I have given her book to a number of colleagues, as her knowledge of energy efficient design takes a back seat to few.
