New York State United Teachers, based in Latham, N.Y., is an organization that has more than 575,000 people who work in or are retired from New York's schools, colleges, and health care facilities. The association comprises classroom teachers, college and university faculty and professional staff, school bus drivers, custodians, secretaries, cafeteria workers, teacher assistants and aides, nurses and health care technicians. NYSUT is a federation of more than 1,200 local unions, each representing its own members. It is affiliated with the American Federation of Teachers and the National Education Association. It elects the people who lead local unions, state and national affiliates, and also elects delegates to state conventions to discuss issues and set policies that determine the programs and services that NYSUT provides.
