Founded in 1979, the National Alliance on Mental Illness, also known as NAMI, a nonprofit organization serves individuals and families. It offers support, education and advocacy services, as well as Family-to-Family, Peer-to-Peer, NAMI Connection, and Hearts and Minds programs. The organization also provides educational programs for the development of life skills. It operates a helpline that offers information on topics related to schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression. The National Alliance on Mental Illness operates a store that sells books, brochures and posters. The center also publishes a magazine that provides information related to mental illnesses. It maintains the Multicultural Action Center, which offers emergency preparedness services during natural and other types of disasters. The National Alliance on Mental Illness maintains a location in Savannah, Ga.
