Insects and Spiders

• Ants
  Ants are the most common problem facing homeowners in our area. Do-it-yourself treatments can often exacerbate the problem and rarely address the nest – the source of the problem. There are many different kinds of ants such as fire ants, pavement ants, crazy ants, Pharaoh ants, Argentine ants and odorous house ants.

  There is a wide variety of spiders that can make it into your home. Many of them are relatively harmless, but others can cause serious medical issues for your family and pets with their bites.
• Termites
  What are termites?  Termites are the most prosperous insects and live on every continent except Antarctica.  Their colonies can range in size from a few hundred to several million and their queen can live anywhere from 30 to 50 years.
• Bed Bugs
  Are you noticing red, itchy bumps after a night in bed? Have you ever looked under your mattress? If you notice rust colored stains you may have a bed bug infestation. • Fleas
  These tiny terrors aggravate people and their pets with their itchy, painful bites. Fleas account for more than half of the dermatological conditions requiring veterinary assistance and even a single flea bite can be intensely irritating. Bites tend to be concentrated on the lower legs but can also occur elsewhere. Some bite victims also suffer from allergic dermatitis characterized by intense itching, hair loss, reddening of the skin and secondary infection. Cat fleas, the most common type of flea found in our area, may also be an intermediary host of dog tapeworms to animals and murine typhus to humans.

  Have you encountered an insect scurrying across your countertop when you flip on the lights for a midnight snack? Cockroaches can hitchhike into even the cleanest of homes on items as innocuous as your grocery bags.
• Silverfish
  The Silverfish Bug, also known as Lepisma saccharina, is a small insect without wings. Its name, silverfish, comes from its silvery color and the fact that resembles a fish. Silverfish bugs are found throughout the world including parts of North America, Australia, Asia, and Europe.
• Bees
  However, some types of bees are less threatening than others. Stingless bees, as the name suggests, don’t have stingers, and cannot harm humans and animals, just like male bumble bees and male carpenter bees. Among the female species, carpenter bees are the most docile and least likely to sting. Female honeybees and bumble bees will sting, but only when provoked.
• Wasps
  Every year the warmer months bring these stinging pests to back yards throughout Texas. There are many different types of wasps, and many of them can become a nuisance around the Buildings and homes.
• Ticks
  Carry fleas, mites, ticks, lice and other biting insects which can spread diseases and pose a serious health risk.
• Crickets
  Cricket outbreaks are one of the most predictable pest events of the year in most areas of Texas. Late summer and fall are when adult crickets become especially abundant around homes and commercial buildings. Although the cricket species associated with outbreaks in Texas have not been well-studied, most belong to the Gryllus assimilis complex and are collectively referred to as black field crickets, or field crickets.

• Scorpions
  Scorpions are terrifying arachnids that no one wants in, or anywhere near, their homes. They have eight legs and a pair of large claws used to seize prey and defend themselves against predators, but that’s not their only weapon —they possess a segmented tail that often curves back over their bodies and is equipped with a venomous stinger. Scorpions have an unusually long life span and live between three and five years. However, some species live 10 – 15 years.

  Bees and wasps are related, with approximately 20,000 species in North America and more than 800 types in Texas alone. The most common of these pests include honeybees, bumble bees, carpenter bees, yellow jackets, hornets, mud daubers, and wasps.
