- ORourke Bros. Memorials and Abate Monuments - Serving the Greater Salem Areas Communities for Over 100 Years. A the beginning of the 20th Century, ORourke Bros. Memorials employed as many as 30 stone craftsmen and monument builders. Using their own train spur, ORourke Bros. Memorials would have large blocks of granite delivered from the Quincy Quarries, as well as from Vermont. From there, the workers would saw the granite into desired shapes, using hand-tools to create beautiful carvings. Many of the techniques used back then were laborious and physically demanding, requiring a high level of craftsmanship. Today, modern manufacturing techniques reduce a lot of the hand-sawing and shaping of headstones, however many hand-carving techniques are still used today. You can see examples of ORourke Brothers Memorials work dating back generations in the nearby cemeteries such as St. Marys Cemetery in Salem, Harmony Grove Cemetery in Salem, Greenlawn Cemetery in Salem, and Pine Grove Cemetery in Lynn, MA. As travel was more restricted in the earlier part of the century, most of ORourke Bros. Memorials clientele came from the surrounding area of Salem, Lynn, Peabody and Marblehead. As automobile ownership increased, ORourke Bros. Memorials began to serve a wider area including Saugus, Revere, Lynnfield, Melrose and Wakefield. These communities continue to be the core clientele of ORourke Bros. Memorials to this day. Walking through any of the local cemeteries in Salem or Lynn will give you a great appreciation of the skilled work-force that created our ancestors headstones. Raised lettering, bas-relief figure carvings, and hand-tooled panels raised off the face of a tombstone were common design elements back then. Some of the most beautiful examples of these types of monuments can be found in Harmony Grove Cemetery, right in our backyard. At one point, Salem, MA was one of the wealthiest port cities in America, and Salems forefathers demanded incredible tombstones and monuments that were emblematic of their families new-found wealth. Nowadays, creating a mausoleum, crypt, sarcophagus, or other large monument could cost more than a new car. Walking through any of the Catholic cemeteries such as St. Josephs Cemetery, St. Jeans Cemetery, and St. Marys Cemetery in Lynn, MA will present you with countless examples of this type of work as well. Over the years, weve also created numerous war memorials, civic monuments, and commemorative bronze plaques and benches around the city. Weve been proud to serve the City of Salem whenever theres been a need to memorialize our citizens, public service officers and brave soldiers. Whether created from bronze or granite, our memorials will stand the test of time, teaching future generations about sacrifices made and deeds accomplished. While ORourke Bros. Memorials roots will always be in serving the communities of Salem, Beverly and Lynn, weve expanded our service to the entire North Shore.
