The Gladden House was constructed in 1898 and has a storied past. Mattie Gladden, a madam in Nashville, Tennessee, returned to her home town of Salem, Indiana and built an extravagant Victorian mansion and opened her business to the chagrin of the town mothers who forced the town fathers to close her down after several years.
