Meals on Wheels By ACC
General Info
"Meals on Wheels by ACC" in Sacramento County initiated service July 1, 2010. The service area covers Sacramento County. Based on the County's experience, we expect to serve about 540, 000 meals to approximately 5, 900 older persons at a cost of nearly $4.8 million per year. Hot and frozen meals will be delivered to the homes of about 2, 300 seniors annually. There are twenty-two congregate sites located throughout the County. Congregate sites provide meal service in churches, senior residences, community centers, and senior centers. About 3, 660 seniors will receive hot meals and nutrition education at these sites annually.Sacramento County Department of Human Assistance began operating the Senior Nutrition Program in 1974 under a grant from the Area 4 Agency on Aging ( A4AA ). While the program was successful in the meal service provided to seniors, the County budget cuts of 2008-2010 economic recession made continued operation financially unrealistic. Sacramento County advised the A4AA that it would discontinue the meals on wheels grant role at the end of June 2010.A4AA did not want to see the meals on wheels effort stop. Doing so would leave thousands of seniors without nutritious lunches, and hundreds of volunteers sidelined. A4AA sought a service provider to continue the meal program. The Asian Community Center of Sacramento Valley Inc responded to queries from the A4AA and the County by creating a new 501 ( c ) 3 non-profit organization called Meals on Wheels by ACC. A very short start-up transition and much needed assistance from the A4AA and County resulted in a July 1, 2010 2010 launch of Meals on Wheels by ACC as the county's senior nutrition program provider. The transition from the County to Meals on Wheels by ACC included many meeting with officials of cities within the county and the County, volunteers, and congregate meal participants ( many of whom agreed to sign-on with MoW by ACC ), and correspondence with home delivered meal participants. The Meals on Wheels program provides a nutritious noontime meal and personal contact to homebound seniors five days a week. Approximately 2, 300 Sacramento County seniors receive Meals on Wheels at home. There are program requirements to receive a home delivered meal so please contact us to find out more.
