Founded in 1908, Umpqua National Forest covers an area of more than 1 million acres in Douglas, Lane and Jackson counties and borders Crater Lake National Park. The four ranger districts that comprise the forest are Cottage Grove, Diamond Lake, North Umpqua and Tiller Ranger. Headquartered in Roseburg, the forest is managed by the United States Forest Service. Umpqua National Forest is home to over 250 wildlife species, including large mammals that include elks, deers, black bears and cougars, as well as the smaller residents, such as squirrels, foxes, raccoons and bats. The forest s recreational activities include camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, mountain biking, rock climbing and boating. Its winter activities include Nordic and downhill skiing, as well as snowshoeing and snowmobiling.
