Island Institute a nonprofit, membership-based community development organization that focuses on the ecology of the Gulf of Maine. Founded in 1983, the Institute maintains a full-time staff of more than 35 people. It has an annual budget of over $2.5 million and membership base of nearly 4,800 individuals. Island Institute provides support through various programs, such as Island Fellows and Maine Island Scholarships. The institute undertakes a range of projects in the areas of education, economic development, alternative energy, fisheries management and working waterfronts. In addition, it maintains a satellite office in Portland in Maine. Island Institute has been publishing The Working Waterfront newspaper for nearly 15 years.
