General Info
MATHFor younger students the Math curriculum focuses on introducing the concept of counting and numbers. As their skill level with numbers progresses, addition and subtraction along with relevant word problems will be introduced. In addition, these students will be taught time, money, and graphs supplemented with pattern recognition and measurement. The focus for these grades is mental math for addition and subtraction. Building on these simple concepts will help students to transition to the next level. LANGUAGE ARTSStarting with level K, students will be introduced to phonics, sight words, rhyming words, and blending. Also, pre-writing skills such as introduction to writing the alphabet and numbers, simple words and simple sentences. Then, pre-reading skills will be introduced where they will explore words, long & short vowels, consonants, building words, proof reading & editing. As they progress, they will be introduced to simple reading comprehension, sentence mechanics, punctuation, parts of speech, fundamentals of writing, and basic essay writing.Levels 3-5LANGUAGE ARTSFor grades 3-5, students will advance in their reading comprehension skills as well as spellings. They will also work with punctuation on more difficult sentences and move to advanced parts of speech. In these levels they will also be introduced to more essay writing skills which include organizing ideas, word choice and proofreading & editing. Students will also be working with sentence mechanics such as subject & predicate, complex & compound sentences, and contractions. MATHIn these levels students will learn multi-digit addition and subtraction, and the focus will shift to multiplication and division. As they progress between levels, more digits will be added to the functions to develop their mental math skills. After they have mastered these skills, decimals/fractions and word problems will be added to challenge their abilities. Finally for grade 5, order of operations and basic algebra will be introduced with some statistics and geometry. Levels 6-8LANGUAGE ARTSStudents at the highest levels will move onto advanced and in-depth versions of previously taught skills in reading comprehension, sentence mechanics, punctuation, and parts of speech. At these levels essay writing becomes a larger focus and the students are introduced to different styles/types of writing, research skills and writing based on fictional and non-fictional texts. In these grades, the students will be preparing for high school literature and essay writing courses.
