Steel Dynamics, established in 1955 and located in Roanoke, Va., produces a variety of steel products for manufacturers and distributors. Its products include billets, angles, flats, channels, rounds and fabricated joists. The company purchased Shredded Products Corporation in 1974, and in 1994, relocated Shredded Products to a more productive and cost-efficient facility in Rocky Mount, Va. In 1975, Steel Dynamics expanded into the fabrication of steel products when it merged with New Millennium Building Systems, a manufacturer of open-web steel joists in nearby Salem, Va. In 1985, the company acquired a second manufacturer of steel joists, Socar, which operates plants in South Carolina and Ohio. In 1998, Steel of West Virginia became a wholly owned subsidiary.
