The City of Roanoke, Va., maintains more than 50 departments and divisions, such as billings and collections, building inspections, communications, economic development, employee health services, engineering, emergency management, homeless assistance, fire, human resources, planning, and parks and recreation. It also has offices of city council, clerk, commissioner of revenue, commonwealth's attorney, treasurer, magistrate, mayor and registrar. In addition, the city has separate sections for public works, neighborhood services, purchasing, real estate valuation, risk management, solid waste management, technology, transportation and youth. The City of Roanoke, Va., operates Roanoke City Public Schools, which is an educational governing authority that operates over 50 educational institutions that include elementary, middle and high schools.
