- CataractsCataract development is a normal part of the aging process that most people experience at some point in their lives. The lens is a part of the eye that focuses light on the retina, and allows us to see things sharply. The lens also focuses at different distances, an ability that decreases with normal aging.
- Cataract SurgeryDuring cataract surgery, part of the front (anterior) capsule that holds the lens is removed. The clear back (posterior) capsule remains intact. For many patients, the posterior capsule remains clear long-term.
- Eye ExamBefore the laser procedure, your doctor does a thorough eye examination to make sure there is no other reason for vision loss.

- UltrasoundBefore surgery, the eye is numbed so patients don’t feel pain. At the start of surgery, your surgeon makes a small incision in the eye. Then, your surgeon uses ultrasound to remove the cloudy lens of the eye, and this is also painless. Afterward, the cloudy lens is replaced with a clear lens implant, called an intraocular lens, or IOL.
