- Male InfertilityYou probably know that stress can have some negative effects on your health. Stress might have an effect on your fertility as well. While the scientific data isn’t firm, several studies have suggested a link between stress and male infertility.
- Emergency CareOne of the most publicized pros of using an ASC is their reduced wait time for appointments. Patients no longer have to wait weeks or months for an appointment at a hospital surgery center. In a hospital surgery center, unforeseen emergency room demands are always a risk and can monopolize resources. This sometimes leads to the postponement of care. But because ASCs focus exclusively on a small number of processes in one setting, they are able to control over-scheduling in a way that hospitals cannot. And that’s why they can provide specialized care at a fraction of the wait time with virtually no scheduling changes. Conversely, hospital surgery centers have large-scale demands for space, resources, and management, making them vulnerable to unexpected events that lead to prolonged wait times.

- Urinary IncontinenceUrinary incontinence, simply known as loss of control over the bladder, is a medical problem in which there is a sudden involuntary leakage of urine. - UrologyCongratulations to Shawn E. White, MD, FACS on his appointment as the new Division Chief of Urology at Reading Hospital. Dr. White is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Drexel University College of Medicine and a partner at the Center for Urologic Care of Berks County.
- Kidney CancerCancer occurs when changes in certain cells cause them to accumulate and form tumors. People with kidney cancer may have one or more tumors in one kidney.
- Kidney StonesA kidney stone is a small mass that forms from crystallized substances in your kidney or, in some cases, one of your ureters (the tubes that connect the kidneys to the bladder). These chemicals aren’t able to dissolve in urine, so the crystals stick together and get larger, forming the stone.

- Interstitial CystitisInterstitial cystitis (IC) is a chronic condition characterized by a feeling of intense pain and pressure in the bladder. For this reason, it is also known as bladder pain syndrome (BPS). In addition to chronic pain, the patient usually suffers from other symptoms as well.
- Urinary Tract InfectionWhen any pathogen (bacteria, viruses, etc.) invades a urinary tract organ, it is termed as urinary tract infection (UTI). Inflammation is the body’s natural reaction to all foreign particles identified as harmful. This results in immune cells destroying the pathogens and saving the organs from their damaging effects. This also has some effects on healthy cells of the body, which explains symptoms like pain and fever.
- Prostate CancerIf your physician recommends surgery to treat your prostate cancer, you may be a candidate for this less invasive surgical procedure called the Minimally Invasive Prostatectomy using the daVinci® Surgical System. This treatment method, when compared to traditional prostate surgery, provides patients with many benefits.

- UltrasoundA prostate ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the prostate gland. The ultrasound guides the urologist in taking tissue samples (biopsies) from the prostate. These tissue samples are tested for cancer cells.
- MRIIn addition to risks related to surgery, complications can include pain at the implant sites, new pain, infection, lead (thin wire) movement/migration, device problems, interactions with certain other devices or diagnostic equipment such as MRI, undesirable changes in urinary or bowel function, and uncomfortable stimulation (sometimes described as a jolting or shocking feeling).
- RadiologyWhen the Center for Urologic Care of Berks County was formed, the practice had three office locations: Berkshire Blvd., Wyomissing, Doctors Office Building in West Reading, and 12th Street in Reading. In February 2003, the Board of Directors approved the creation of Berks Urologic Surgery Center (BUSC) to be a licensed ambulatory surgery center. In May 2003, BUSC performed its first test cases and began full operations in June. In summer 2003, the Wyomissing, Doctors Office Building, and Reading offices were closed, and all doctors and staff were consolidated to the 1320 Broadcasting Road office. In March 2007, CUC’s Imaging Department opened with diagnostic radiology equipment and a Siemens 6 Slice CT unit. In August 2009, our on-site Pathology Lab opened.
- General SurgeryIn addition to being upfront about rates, ASCs are a cost-effective, high-quality alternative to inpatient care for surgical services, and they are saving the patients, insurance carriers and government money without sacrificing quality care.
