Established in 1956, Emily Spong Preschool Center is a part of Portsmouth Public Schools, which operates various alternative, elementary, middle and high schools. Emily Spong Preschool Center serves various prekindergarten students through its Breakthrough to Literacy, Open Court Reading and Raising a Reader programs. It includes daily reading and writing, individualized software instruction, and phonological, phonemic and print awareness activities. In addition, it offers various other preschool programs, such as Head Start and Bright Start. The school operates a parent-teacher association that supports and organizes various school events and programs through its fundraising activities. Emily Spong Preschool Center also operates family literacy programs. It is located in Portsmouth, Va.
