- Established in 1997, Water Pollution Control Laboratory is a more than 35,000-square-foot facility that is a model for sustainable development and is a part of the city of Portland in Oregon. It works to conserve energy with self-dimming fluorescent lights, and motion sensitive light switches and windows. The laboratory is comprised of the Portland Bureau of Environmental Services Pollution Prevention Services group has a spill protection citizen response team that investigates spills, slicks and suspicious discharges 24 hours. Water Pollution Control Laboratory also maintains an environmental services source control division that works with commercial and industrial customers to control pollution by encouraging businesses to reuse potential pollutants. It employs various chemists and technicians who analyze treatment plants, industrial waste discharges, stormwater, rivers and streams and soil excavated during construction projects.
