Ever since I discovered the Courtyard Cafe in Port Townsend, WA, I go there at least once a week, sometimes more, for a delicious, home-cooked meal made with fresh ingredients. The chicken noodle soup on Mondays is my very favorite. Heidi makes it with home-made noodles, like my Mom used to when I was a kid, and big chunks of chicken. The BLAST--bacon, lettuce, avacado, and tomato (I forgot what the S is for) on home-made whole wheat bread (or white if you prefer) is the best of its kind and the Twisted Cristo is equally wonderful. Not only are the soup and sandwiches great, but they also have all of the standard espresso drinks including traditional hot chocolate which can be served with a toasted home-made marshmallow from the big glass jar of home-made marshmallows on the counter. And the baked goods--yum! My favorites are the chocolate chip cookies, crispy on the outside, melty chocolate chippy on the inside. Will's cinnamon rolls are so yummy and sweet too and made with three different kinds of cinnamon. He gets up at 4 every morning to make them fresh. There are always scones, turnovers, other kinds of cookies(usually peanut butter, snickerdoodles, and a cookie that includes raisins, nuts and white chocolate), and delicious homemade pies (my favorite is the German chocolate pecan pie) of all kinds, depending on the day. Some days Heidi makes iced brownies, Nanaimo bars, or country mud (rich chocolate brownie cake with gooey icing best served warm with whipped cream). You can order pies for holiday dinners. Service is great, and you can get a cup of soup and dessert for around ten or eleven dollars most days. It is a real family atmosphere. Heidi and Will's very nice kids are often in and out, or helping out, learning the business. They are open from 8:30-5 Wednesday-Monday. When they close up shop on Monday for their Tuesday day off, they wrap up all of their baked goods and other remaining food to be picked up by the Food Bank. If you've already been there, you don't need me to recommend you return, but if you haven't, give yourself a treat and stop in for lunch or a snack.
