General Info
ABOUT THE ORCHESTRAS... Established in 1974, Three Rivers Young Peoples Orchestras is a non-profit organization that provides the musically talented young people of the tri-state area with the opportunity to achieve the highest level of artistic advancement, music education and social growth. The Young Peoples Orchestra ( YPO ) is open to students ages 14 18. The Symphonette is for students ages 10 15. Once accepted, Symphonette students do not have to re-audition until they are ready to audition for the next ensemble. Rehearsals are held every Saturday during the school year from 1: 00 3: 30 p.m. at Carnegie Mellon University. Attendance is very important and we expect all members to commit their Saturday afternoons to TRYPO. Symphonette and YPO members participate in monthly sectional coaching from Pittsburgh Symphony members, and chamber music classes are available to YPO members for an additional fee. There is an annual concerto competition for the YPO, master classes by international guest conductors and soloists from the Pittsburgh Symphony, and approximately four concerts per orchestra. ABOUT THE STAFF... The staff of educators and musicians are experienced professionals and many play in the Pittsburgh Symphony. John Wilcox, Conductor of the YPO, is the Conductor of the Dana Symphony, Chamber, and Opera Orchestras at Youngstown State University. He performs as the Concertmaster of the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra. Symphonette Conductor Charlotta Klein Ross has been a cellist with the Pittsburgh Symphony for more than 35 years. She assumed the post of Symphonette conductor in January, 1999. Eight Pittsburgh Symphony members coach monthly sectional rehearsals. Executive Director Barbara S. Thompson received her B.M.Ed. from Northwestern University, has taught music in public and private schools, and is also a private piano teacher.
