NanoSonic is a developer of molecular self-assembly processes that enable the controlled synthesis of material structure at the nanometer level and the manufacture of new materials with designed engineering-constitutive behaviors. The advantage of most of these materials is that they can be synthesized at room temperature and pressure on a wide variety of substrate materials using a process that is environmentally benign. Based in Blacksburg, Va., NanoSonic was founded in 1998 in cooperation with Virginia Tech and the state of Virginia. The company has exclusively licensed nine patents related to electrostatic self-assembly processing. It is establishing its own intellectual property portfolio to enable process, material and device commercialization. Electrostatic self-assembly allows ultrauniform formation of multimple, nanometer-thick layers of material into functional ultrathin films. NanoSonic has a library of these self-assembled materials and has demonstrated synthesis of more than 2,000 individual material layers.
