- ArthritisThe ankle has the potential to develop arthritis, inflammation, and gradual degradation of a joint. Arthritis may be the result of mechanical “wear and tear†(osteoarthritis), or it can be the result of the body’s immune system mistakenly attacking the joint (rheumatoid arthritis).
- Plantar FasciitisStarting your day with stabbing heel pain isn’t at the top of anyone’s to-do list. But when you’re living with plantar fasciitis, you begin every day with heel pain. It may go away once you get moving, only to return if you sit or stand for too long. Living with any pain can be draining – and foot pain affects every step of your day.
- Cryotherapy, including cryotherapy or topical use of a peeling medication. Severe warts resistant to other forms of treatment, however, may require surgical excision.
- Diabetic Foot CareOur offices around the Chicago metro area will thoroughly examine your feet and test for signs of poor blood flow or damaged nerves. Some treatment options you might need include:Â
- Diabetes Care
- UltrasoundUltraMIST applies low-frequency ultrasound at the site of treatment, utilizing a non-contact fluid such as saline and resulting in a low-energy mist. The mist cleans and debrides the wound, removing any fibrin, yellow slough, tissue exudates and bacteria from the site. The mist also increases perfusion through vasodilation, which in turn increases the oxygen and nutrients to the affected area, promoting healing to the wound.
- MRIRecently a more compact MRI machine has made it possible for patients to get imaging of their foot and ankle without having to put their entire body into the MRI machine. The patient can simply sit next to the machine and place the affected extremity inside.

- Pinched NerveNerve pain: Most commonly a neuroma, which is a pinched nerve most commonly found between your third and fourth toes. Patients affected by this will often complain about burning or tingling pain.
- Ankle Surgery
- Bunion SurgeryIf you have a bunion that is as bothersome as it is painful, our podiatrists may recommend bunion surgery. Bunion surgery is the only way to permanently remove a bunion that has formed on your foot, all other treatments will focus on reducing the symptoms of the bunion.
- BunionsMany different surgical approaches have been developed to remove bunions. The latest, and most advanced, significantly reduces the risk of recurrence by targeting the bunion’s root cause. This surgery is called lapiplasty.
- GangreneThis reduces blood circulation to the feet, leading to foot pain, leg weakness, and extreme cold. It can even result in gangrene and limb loss.
- Arthroscopy
- Ingrown ToenailsIngrown toenails, also known as onychocryptosis, are common conditions that can affect any individual regardless of their age or health. When toenails curve as they grow out, the toenail causes the adjacent skin to thicken and causes discomfort. Or when an ingrown toenail tears into the adjoining skin, it causes swelling. It may occur on the left or right side of the nail, or even sometimes on both sides!
- Reconstructive SurgeryWhen you book an appointment at one of the Advanced Foot and Ankle Centers of Illinois, you’re not just seeing a doctor about a problem. You’re hiring our full team of expert physicians and specialists. Our collaborative approach allows you to benefit from the broadest possible range of treatment options—from conservative approaches to state-of-the-art technology and complex reconstructive surgery.
- CornsBunions will not improve if you ignore them; without correction, they will only get worse over time. Common symptoms include persistent pain (especially when wearing shoes), decreased range of motion in the big toe (which can interfere with normal movement), and the formation of secondary complications like corns and calluses.
- Cyst
- UlcerWith that said, it is imperative that you see a podiatrist if you have a lower extremity ulcer or wound so that you can be properly and thoroughly taken care of. To see what your options are, come see us at Advanced Foot & Ankle Centers of Illinois. Remember, we value limb preservation and will do everything that we can to preserve your limb!
- CallusesPlantar warts are caused by a virus and can appear on the soles of your feet, which are often mistaken for calluses or scars. While usually harmless, they can be contagious and cause discomfort while walking. To get your warts treated, come into one of the Advanced Foot and Ankle Centers of Illinois offices in the Chicago area.
- FungusThick toenails are not always fungus. The thickening of the toenail can be caused by repetitive microtrauma to the toenail and toenail bed, usually from ill-fitting shoes, and also one traumatic event to the nail bed. It is usually wise to get a biopsy to see if the toenail thickening is from fungus or another cause. This is a simple, pain-free procedure done in the office.
- Sports MedicineHelping you recover quickly from sports injuries with our advanced therapy options to get you back on the playing field ASAP.
- Physical TherapyDifferent problems and personal needs require different approaches to treatment, and if something more traditional, such as physical therapy or custom orthotics, can provide the right type of care, we will absolutely consider them. In some cases, a mix of traditional and regenerative therapies may be recommended.

- Ankle SprainAnkle sprain is usually caused by improper shoe gear, gait instability, or trauma. Individuals with a cavus foot type (supinated foot), are inheritably prone to inversion ankle sprains. However, their risk for ankle sprain increases if they wear shoes that exaggerate the condition (e.g. supinated shoes). Gait instability is seen more commonly in older individuals or in individuals who are recovering from trauma (e.g. car accident, stroke, etc.).

- Bunions ProblemsPatients undergo surgery when in-office conservative treatments have not eased their pain or improved their mobility. - Fungus ToenailsI walked into the office and was amazed at how sweet and experienced the staff are. And then blown away by how they offered such an ambiance of soft music, the wonderful smell of relaxing movable sand with a metal ball inside the side tables.. flavored water, and coffee. It was walking into a spa. State of the art equipment, then getting into the suite while waiting for the Dr. a nurse puts a real warm wet towel on your feet while I sat in the most cushioned exam chair. I waited for Dr. Tiernan for less than 5 mins which was good because my feet were relaxing in that wonderful towel. Dr. Tiernan was pleasant thorough, I mean thorough ya’ll. He did above and beyond. Dr. Tiernan has put his knowledge, love, thought and care effort into every detail he touches from his spa experience in his office to how he carries himself as Dr and as a person of the community is just simply amazing. He has a store inside that has so many great products from toenail fungus medicine to be used with his nail polish to be while you’re treating it. Very pretty comfortable shoes and sandals! Certified fitter Miss Kim will take great care of you.**** You must see this for yourself*** too much to mention! The treatment is out of this world and you don’t see this kind of sweet treatment anywhere else.
