Founded in 1862, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is a part of the Department of Health and Human Services and consists of more than nine centers. The organization is responsible for protecting public health by assuring the safety, and security of human and veterinary drugs, biological products, medical devices, food supply, cosmetics and products that emit radiation. It also offers science-based information for the use of medicines and food to improve health. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration employs more than 9,100 people who include chemists, pharmacologists, physicians, microbiologists, veterinarians, pharmacists and lawyers. The organization is affiliated with the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and the National Center for Food Safety and Technology. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration conducts domestic and foreign high-risk food inspections.
