Expert Treatment in a Wilderness Setting
- General Info
- With specialized care for male and female adolescents, ages 10-17, SUWS of the Carolinas is a leading provider of short-term, high impact clinical treatment that is set in a wilderness environment. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains in Western North Carolina, SUWS offers effective therapeutic interventions that are designed to help young people overcome academic, behavioral, emotional, substance abuse, and mental health concerns. Within SUWS’s innovative programming, youth are able to learn how to accept personal responsibility for their choices, confront familial issues, and invest in their own personal growth by establishing healthy and prosocial goals for their futures. The staff of qualified professionals who guide the young people engaged in this program are committed to helping each youth learn life lessons that can serve well for a lifetime. It is the mission of the SUWS wilderness program to empower young people and their families to realize inner strengths and grow so that happy, healthy, and fruitful futures are what await them upon completing treatment at this renowned clinical program. In order to meet the needs of the young people who come to SUWS for care, this center offers five residential programming options. These five programs treat distinct concerns and provide therapeutic interventions that are age-appropriate for the populations they treat. For behavioral concerns, specific interventions are utilized to alter destructive patterns of behavior. Youth who are battling substance abuse concerns will navigate through the 12-step model for recovery while learning skills for sustaining sobriety. When young people are suffering from symptoms of a mental health condition, SUWS programming will assist these youth in acquiring the necessary skills for coping and managing said symptoms. And finally, for young people who are grappling with the symptoms of an autism spectrum disorder, this center supplies the treatment needed to develop social skills and form healthy relationships with others. By providing treatment in a wilderness setting, youth can overcome the obstacles they are facing, while confronting their fears and learning the skills needed to heal and be independent. Lastly, SUWS offers additional support through its family program, which aims to improve familial relationships and communication skills that can serve well for a lifetime.
