General Info

Established in 1861, Kansas School for the Deaf is a special education school offering education, support and enrichment programs for children who are hearing impaired. The school offers an early childhood education center, and elementary, middle and high school programs. The early childhood center offers various programs for the development of physical, social, emotional and cognitive skills. The school also offers audiology, occupational and physical therapies, shared reading project, deaf mentoring and sign language classes. Its elementary program includes courses in various subjects, such as math, science, social studies, deaf studies, keyboarding technology and American Sign Language. The middle school program includes courses in various subjects, such as language arts, physical education, Earth and life science, world history and geography, art and career exploration. It also offers vocational courses and career guidance to familiarize the students with multimedia technology, digital photography and Internet usage. The school also offers various activities and clubs, such as academic bowl, Close up Program, performing arts, job Olympics, oratorical competitions and community services.
