The magazine, named after the Sunset Limited railroad line, was issued in 1898. Sunset Magazine has documented the idea of a ranch house, indoor and outdoor living, cooking with regional ingredients, low water and maintenance gardening, and western-style home decor. The publisher offers various kitchen-tested recipes. It offers various photographs on kitchens, bathrooms, room detail, bathrooms, window treatments, and small spaces. Sunset has presented various idea houses, such as the green-built idea house in collaboration between the magazine, members of the state of California's Sustainable Building Task Force, and a builder.
