In December 2014, I placed a pick-up order for fish and chips, i.e. fries. While I was placing the order, I asked the waitress if I could substitute the cold slaw for more fries. She said yes. When I went to pick-up the order, the staff was very friendly. Ennis, the manager, even came out to greet me. After a short chat, I walked back home with my order. I should note that every person in and around Chicago knows how cold it gets in the winter. When I got home, I changed out of my winter gear and opened up my to-go box. Not only did I not have my substitution, but I was not given any fries at all – mind you the name of the dish is “fish and chips.” I called Ale House and spoke to the waitress who took my order. She apologized, but could only offer to fix my order and a credit of fries.

I decided to return to the restaurant. Shortly after I arrived, Ennis came out with my original order of fries. When I asked how he can make this right, he seemed bewildered. After he realized that I did not receive any fries at all, he became apologetic and offered to credit my account with a free burger. I accepted the offer. While Ennis was taking down my phone number to add to his records, I told him that he handled the situation well.

As a current business owner, I can attest to the importance of taking care of your customers when there is a mistake. It may cost you a little up front, but you are making a small investment that will likely pay-off quickly and many times over. As a result of Ennis’ behavior, I will continue to do business with Ale House.

Ah! What used to be!

...is no longer. Like: decent food, ambience and SERVICE. Especially service, now virtually non-existent.

We used to go there for breakfast several times a month (strawberry crepes: yum!) Now, not so much. Recommendation: give Avenue Ale House a pass.
